Netball is similar to basketball although the rules, equipment and team numbers are slightly different: no dribbling; no running with the ball; 7 players per team; ball must be passed in 3 seconds; ball and basket are slightly smaller; there is no backboard; players are designated to certain areas of the court. Netball does have its quirks, from a basketball perspective. The court is a bit larger, the ball a bit smaller. Its quarters are 15 minutes rather than 12 in the NBA. There are seven players per team instead of five and players have to stay within their assigned third of the court. Oh, and the player with the ball can’t bounce it or run with it.
Netball is played by over 20 million people in more than 70 countries. In 1995, Netball became a “recognized” Olympic sport and a strong push is underway for its inclusion in the Olympic Games Program. This is a sport that is on the rise. Here are a few articles and websites that can make you more familiar with Netball.
